March 11, 1924 - March 2, 2010

ANDERSON Donald F. Carey, 85, Anderson, passed away March 2, 2010, at his home after an extended illness.

He was born March 11, 1924, in Anderson, to Fred and Mary (Marsh) Carey. He attended Fall Creek Valley Elementary School and Markleville High School.

Don served in the Army during World War II from June 1943 to February 1946 and was stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He worked at Delco Remy, Anderson, for 32 years, retiring in October 1974. Don was also the owner and operator of Carey Landscaping for 47 years, retiring from this work only a few years ago.

Don loved his family, being outdoors, working on his tractor, doing projects in his shop, hunting, fishing and open-wheel racing. Until illness restricted his activities, he had attended nearly every Little 500 race at the Anderson Speedway. He was a friendly, compassionate and giving person who never met a stranger. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Don was a member of the Markleville North Christian Church, Ovid Masonic Lodge and a founding member of the Fall Creek Valley Conservation Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mildred (Otto) Carey, whom he married July 5, 1947; two sons, Ronald (Wilma) Carey and Rick (Marlene) Carey, all of Anderson; sister, Clarice Sholty of Anderson; brother, Clifford Carey of Anderson; three grandchildren, Tina (Jeff) Durbin of Pensacola, Fla., Chad (Carrie) Carey of Anderson, and Cayla Carey (fiance, Adam Truman) of Anderson; stepgrandchildren, Stephanie (Casey) Maher of Muncie, and Kelly (Travis) Silvers of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Riley Durbin of Pensacola, Fla., and Zane Carey of Anderson; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Connor and Payton Maher of Muncie, Quinn Kuroiwa and Felicity Silvers, both of Indianapolis.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, Anderson, with the Rev. Gerald Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Ovid Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the South Chapel.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Fred Spottsville, Dr. James Ong, Dr. Brian Eddy and Saint John's Home Health Care and Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Markleville North Christian Church Food Bank, Adams Township Fire Department and Saint John's Hospice.
