This military marker and the early Leeds town clerk records do not provide data that establishes Hersey's date of birth or year of death. However the Leeds town history says that Hersey was one of five brothers to come to Leeds, though three ultimately settled in other towns. Of these brothers, William buried in this cemetery, and Elijah buried in Turner, have gravestones that establish their dates of birth. Four of the five brothers, and the two dates of birth, correspond with sons born to Benjamin and Rebecca (Drew) Gilbert of Halifax, Massachusetts. The Halifax birth records say Hersey was born on the date posted above.
Hersey's date of death not established with certainty. The page with his date of death in the town clerk records is torn, so the year of death is missing. His son was appointed executor of his estate on January 14, 1817, so Hersey must have died in 1816 or earlier.
Hersey married Abigail Randall in Massachusetts in 1771. Their first child was born in Massachusetts or Winthrop, Maine, in 1773. The remaining children were listed as born in Leeds. Hersey and Abigail had about 13 children, including a Hersey Jr.
Hersey supported his family as a cabinetmaker and house joiner.
Hersey's first name was spelled different ways depending on the record. Even in estate notices "Heircy" was used interchangeably with "Hersey."
