Birth: Apr. 7, 1822
New York, USA
Death: Sep. 21, 1894
Manitowoc County
Wisconsin, USA

Norton Kyler Johnson was born 07 Apr 1822 in New York, and died 21 September 1894 in Niles, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He married Lorella Mariah Tyler in New York, a daughter of David and Phoebe Osborn Tyler. Lorella Maria was born 09 Mar 1823 in New York, and died 06 Feb 1910 in Niles, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.

Norton and Mariah's first son, Mandanus David Johnson, was born in 1848 in New York. In June of 1848 the family moved to Wisconsin, taking household goods and a grain thrashing machine with them on the lake steam freighter Sultana from Buffalo, New York, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then traveling overland, possibly on the plank road to Janesville, and then on to Oregon Township, Dane County, Wisconsin..
Norton and family lived near his parents and younger siblings in Oregon Township for a period of 2 or 3 years before relocating northward to Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.

Norton built a sawmill in 1865 with the help of Tyler relatives and neighbors. The mill had been enlarged in the 1880s and was still in operation in 1920. Timber growing scarce, the mill was dismantled and the hardware sold in the mid 1920s. Norton and/or Martin also built a shingle mill which was also operated until the mid or late 1920s. They opened a store, cheese factory, and, later, Martin opened a saloon. The saloon was in operation until prohibition, after which it was rented, and finally the building was sold and moved at the time of the widening of County 32 (now W) in 1945. It has been beautifully restored and is now located on Newton Road southwest of St. Nazianz, Wisconsin. The area around the Norton Johnson home farm was in later years called Slab City due to the large mounds of wood slabs piled in the area.
