Leta Gertrude "Jackie" Saulsbury, 98, of Amarillo died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011.
Services were Dec. 10 in Weatherford, Okla. Burial was in Erick Cemetery. Arrangements were by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Mrs. Saulsbury was born Oct. 7, 1913, south of Erick, Okla., to Jerome Ira and Leta Ila Johnson Downs. She grew up in Elk City, Okla., and Pampa, where her dad was chief of police. She finished high school in 1933 in Pampa. During that summer, she won several beauty contests in Texas and New Mexico and was crowned Queen of the West.
Mrs. Saulsbury gave her life to Christ at a young age and was a Baptist.
She married Leo Douglas "Tuke" Saulsbury on June 27, 1934. They made their home in Pampa and later in Perryton. While Tuke worked for Halliburton, they lived in South Carolina, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia and Michigan. Tuke was sent to South America during the early 1940s to keep the oil flowing for the war effort.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Loyd and Owen; two sisters, Phara Strawn and Olivia Abercrombie; a niece, Jo Ila Quinn; and a nephew, Joel Downs.
Survivors include two daughters, Kay Cantrell and Sharon Cox; a son, Ray Saulsbury; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews, Glenda Staton, Doria Graves Fischer, Charles Abercrombie, Bob Strawn, Jerry Strawn, Duane Strawn and Jimmy Downs; and many other relatives and friends.
