DANVILLE - Albert Sidney "Pete" Astin, III, also known by his grandchildren as "Big Papa", 70, of 130 Blue Ridge View Dr., Danville, went home to be with the Lord after three weeks of declining health Thursday June 23, 2011, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville.
Mr. Astin was born June 13, 1941, in Pittsylvania County to the late Albert Sidney Astin, Jr. and Helen Cassada Astin.
Mr. Astin was married to Cynthia Pressley Astin of the residence.
He worked for Dan River Mills as a supervisor for 40 years. Mr. Astin was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a deacon and director of the men's ministry. He also took great joy in serving breakfast each Sunday morning for the Sunday School Department.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his stepson, Anthony Paul Brooks.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Cindi Arnn (Buford) of Keeling, and Angela Dalton (Bill) and son, Brian Astin, Sr. (Joanne) of Franklin County; one stepson, Scott Brooks (Misty) of Danville; one sister, Brenda Astin Summerall (Skip) of Gloucester; two brothers, Thomas Astin (Barbara) of Danville, and Douglas Astin of Reidsville, N.C.; he is also survived by 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, at Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1380 West Main St., Danville, with the Rev. Michael Pressley and Rev. Ron Graham officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens, Danville.
The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 26, prior to the service at Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church and at other times will be at the residence, 130 Blue Ridge View Dr., Danville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church building fund, 1380 West Main St., Danville, or the SPCA of Danville, P.O. Box 3352, Danville, Va. 24543, in honor of his beloved dog, Sadie.
