Mrs Martha Jane Coon, aged 63 years, died Friday at 9am at the home of her daughter, Mrs I. T. Andrews, in Palestine, Texas, following a brief illness caused from a paryletic stroke. Mrs Coon was in Texas visiting relatives at the time of her death. The body was brought to Jena by the Bailey Undertaking establishment of Palestine, who arrived in Jena Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and remained until after the funeral services Sunday afternoon. Although not confined to her bed, Mrs Coon had been in ill health for several months prior to her death.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon. These services were preceded by a brief song and prayer service at the home of her daughter, Mrs H. W. Cannon, of Jena, conducted by Rev I. T. Andrews. Floral offerings sent to the residence, church, and grave bespoke the high esteem in which Mrs Coon was held by her host of friends. During here life, Mrs Coon and requested that "Never Grow Old," "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," and
"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" be sung when the last rites were pronounced over her body. This request was complied with at the funeral services. "Never Grow Old" was sung as a duet by Miss Ethlee Neill and Mr Dewey Bradford. Many who viewed the corpse remarked of the loveliness and peaceful expression on the face of their deceased friend.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev A. S. J. Neill, pastor of Jena
Methodist Church, with interment in Nolley Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs Coon is survived by Mrs A. A. G. Taylor, Jena; Mrs J. Huffman, Nebo; Mrs Lola Huggins, Port Arthur, Texas; Mrs G. Hebron, Nebo, sisters; Rev L. E. Crocks, Shreveport; Mr Elias Crocks, Archie, brothers. The following children survive: Mrs I. T. Andrews, Palestine, Texas; Mr C. R. Coon, Jasper, Texas; Mrs M. B. Dorsey, El Dorado, Ark; Mrs J. T. Millican, Baton Rouge; Mrs H. B. Davis, Jr., Livingston, Texas; Mr C. B. Coon, Vicksburg, Miss., Mr L. H. Coon, Jena; Mrs H. W. Cannon, Jena, and Mrs C. W. Poe, Livingston, Texas. All of the children were present at the funeral except Mrs Poe, who was unable to attend.
The pallbearers, all sons-in-law and nephews of the deceased were: Messrs. Fred Faulkenheimer, Vidalia, (Nephew); Marion Taylor, Jena, (Nephew); J. T. Millican, Batton Rouge; M. B. Dorsey, El Dorado; H. B. Davis, Jr., Livingston, Texas, and Rev I. T. Andrews, Palenstine, Texas.
Mrs Coon had been a resident of Jena for the past 24 years, moving here from Nebo. Early in life she joined the Methodist Church, and remained a consistent member until death. She was born in Catahoula Parish in 1868 and in 1896 was married to Charles B. Coon, who preceded her to the grave several years.
The Coon family has the sympathy of their many friends in the bereavement.
