Death: Nov. 7, 2004

Sgt 1st Class McVey saw a lot of changes in the United States military since the Vietnam War, when he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and isolated from his future wife. While in Iraq, he got to talk to his family in real time in a video conferencing call within days of his 26th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, and two sons. McVey first enlisted in the Marines in 1971 and joined the West Virginia National Guard in 1975. In 1983, he became an Army Reservist and served as a Supply Sergeant before being called back to active duty and sent to Iraq. He was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways. He became ill while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom at Camp Taji, Iraq. He was evacuated from Iraq in late September and sent to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While at Walter Reed, McVey was visited by numerous Army generals and high-ranking military officials who had continued to follow his progress and support his family. He was the son of the late Carlos E. and Elsie C. Wiley McVey. His father-in-law, the late David Freeman Richmond of Oak Hill, also preceded him in death. He was awarded numerous medals and awards throughout his tenure including: National Defense Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Human Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, West Virginia State Service Ribbon, West Virginia State Emergency Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
