Robert I. Evans Jr. CHESAPEAKE
Robert Ira Evans Jr., 88, of the 2400 block of Dunbarton Drive, died June 26, 2005. A native of Norfolk County, he was the son of the late Robert I. Evans Sr. and Maude Cherry Evans. Master Sgt. Evans received the Bronze Star for his service in the Corps of Engineers of the U.S. Army during World War II and a meritorious commendation for achievements at Milne Bay, New Guinea, and retired after 25 years as a design engineer with Borden Chemical Company. He was a member and deacon emeritus of Rosemont Christian Church, having held several offices there over the years. An accomplished artist, Mr. Evans was a member of the Southside Artist Association and worked with "The Healing Arts" of Chesapeake General Hospital. He also was an avid astronomer, having built his own telescope. Active for many years with the Boy Scouts of America, he was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and had been inducted into the Order of the Arrow. He was an enthusiastic member of the Big Blue Club of ODU, and had been a season tickets holder of Lady Monarchs’ Basketball games for many years. He is survived by his wife, Tama C. Evans; a son, Robert I. Evans III and wife Doris of Virginia Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Allan Shea Evans. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Jerry Kilyk officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Rosemont Christian Church, 3505 Bainbridge Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23324. The family would like to thank the paramedics of the Chesapeake E.M.S. units that assisted them. They also wish to express deep appreciation to Pastor Kilyk and the many friends at Rosemont Christian Church for the love and many kindnesses shown them during his illness.
