HARNED - Sunday evening, March 13th, 1898, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Martin, Livermore, Colorado, Mrs. Julia Ann Harned, aged nearly eighty-nine years.
Julia Ann Ellis was born June 26, 1809, in Athol, Warren county, New York. Her father was a soldier in the war of the revolution and also commanded a company in the war of 1812. She was married in 1833 and moving west with her husband at an early day settled in Iowa, where Mr. Harned died twenty-seven years ago. Mrs. Harned came to Colorado in September, 1897, with her daughter, Mrs. Martin, with whom she had lived many years, the family locating at Livermore, where they now reside.
Mrs. Harned enjoyed good health up to within a very short time of her death, but she has been all ready to answer the Master's call for many years. Until her mental faculties began to give away about a year ago, she loved to rehearse the events of her youth and to dwell on the advancement the country has made in wealth, in population, in power and greatness and in the arts and sciences during her life. The steamship, railroad, telegraph, telephone and all the wonders of mechanics of the nineteenth century have been developed since her childhood, and she possessed a wonderful fund of anecdotes relating to the early history of the country with which she loved to entertain her friends.
The funeral and burial took place at Livermore on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A. S. Phelps of Greeley, conducting the services.
Five children and a large circle of friends and relatives survive her. The children are Mrs. Harriet Martin, Mrs. J. H. Swan and Mr. D. M. Harned all of Livermore; Mrs. Melissa Posey of Steuben, Wisconsin and Mrs. Cynthia N. Martin of Eleroy, Iowa.
