SSG Richard Vernon Riggs, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Goldsboro, NC.

Staff Sergeant Richard Vernon Riggs was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Riggs served our country until May 14th, 1968 in Thua Thien, South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was not married. It was reported that Richard died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. Richard was born on June 8th, 1944 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. SSG Riggs is on panel 60E, line 016 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 3 years.

I was a 2nd LT, stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC when I served as the liaison officer between the Army and the family of Sgt Riggs. This was a great honor to represent the Army and helping the family with arrangements for a full military funeral for this fallen comrade. I hope to visit the Wall one day to see his name engraved among all the other fallen heroes. Michael Greene.

He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry(AMBL), USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Air Medal with Multiple Oak Leaf Clusters, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
