Joseph was the fourth of seven children born to John Hogan and Jane (McFarland) Bean (*note: some of the siblings changed their names during this time to Beene or Been). He (1) married Jane Blake and they had five children: Elizabeth, Miles, Aubrey, Jesse C. and Joseph B. He then married (2) Katherine Alexander and they had eight children: George Houston, Susan, Emmaline, Amarillo, Hazzard, Constance, Ritson, & Rufus. He later married (3) Martha Jane Cockrell.
