Marjorie Vance, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away April 12 at the LeRoy Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mrs. Vance was born April 20, 1917, to Clarence and Mayme Sappington Spratt. She married Clarence Hankins in 1935, but was tragically widowed after a few short months. On Oct. 16, 1943, she married Dunkin D. Vance of LeRoy. Mr. Vance preceded her in death in December 1983 after 40 years of marriage.
Mrs. Vance lived the majority of her life in and around the LeRoy area, and was an avid bowler, collecting several first-place team trophies throughout the years. She was perhaps best known to many in LeRoy as the proprietress for nine years of Dunk and Marj's, a popular drugstore/soda fountain during the 1950s. Marj was always quick with a friendly smile and time for a chat. She knew her steady customers so well that she often had the coffee poured and ready to serve as they were walking through the door. She retired from the Beich's Candy Company (Nestlé's) in 1983 after 21 years of service. During World War II, Marj spent several months in California doing soft soldering on airplanes.
She is survived and sadly missed by her sister, Hazel (Larry) Madary of Chanhassen, Minn.; two daughters, Paula K. McKinnies of Indianapolis, and Billie D. Cox of Evansville, Ind.; six grandchildren, Candi (Joseph) McKinnies-Shreve, Sean McKinnies, Kyle (Rebecca) McKinnies, Deneen Holman, John Vinnedge and Malisa (Ray) Weiling; 13 great-grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Holman, J.T., Luke and Erica Vinnedge, Macy Weiling, Kolton, Grace, Rose and Jack McKinnies, Mariah and Jessica Hale and Dawson Banasek, all residents of Indiana, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd (Marian) Spratt, Paul (Virginia) Spratt, Emory (Lenora) Spratt, Vernon (Margaret) Spratt and Merle (Barbara) Spratt; and three sisters, Marianetta (Korneil) Griesser, Thelma (Frank) O'Paterny and Maureen (John) Garee.
