Herbert W. Bruns the son of Sigmund and Eda (Czirr) Bruns was born November 7, 1923 at Hardy, Nebraska. He departed this life on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 84 years.
Herb was baptized on November 18, 1923 at Peter's Lutheran Church in Byron, NE and confirmed in 1937 by Rev. Jungmeyer at Salem Lutheran Church north of Superior. Herb grew up in the Superior, Nebraska community and graduated from Superior High School with the class of 1942. After graduation Herb served his country with the United States Army during World War II enlisting on March 3rd 1943 and was honorably discharged on December 9, 1946. While serving with the Army Herb was stationed two years in Greenland. On August 18, 1946 Herb was united in marriage to Bettie Nelson at Mankato, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of four children, two daughters and two sons. Herb had been a long time employee of Ideal Cement in Superior working 43 years before retiring in 1985.
Herb had been a long time member of Centennial Lutheran Church of Superior, the Superior American Legion Post of which he held many positions including commander from 1975 to 1976 and a member of the Superior Red Caps sports boosters club. He had been very involved with American Legion Baseball and had coached the Superior Team for many years. During his younger years Herb would referee High School area football games. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and always looked forward to camping trips to Colorado. Herb and Bettie have been long time avid Husker football fans, being season ticket holders since 1962.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Bettie of Superior, NE; daughters: Connie Pike and husband Larry of Euless, TX; Sheryl Parrish and husband Bob of Omaha, NE; sons: Steve Bruns and wife Kellie of Superior, NE; David Bruns of Ruskin, NE: sisters; Mildred Johnson of Omaha, NE and Alice McClure of Medford, OR; brother Arnold Bruns and wife Donna of Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren Brent, Kristine, Camden, Kelly, Chris, Gabby, Christian, Ashley, Frank, Dionne, Ashley, Charlie, Zach, Katie and Jon; nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held this Saturday 2:00 PM, February 23, 2008 at the Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior, NE. Pastor Paul Albrecht will be officiating.
Burial with military honors will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Memorials in lieu of flowers to Centennial Lutheran Church. Williams Funeral Home of Superior, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
