CYRUS SCHALL 96, Veteran of GAR, Expires At Ilion
ILION - Cyrus Schall, 96, formerly of Hecla, sole survivor of James E. Jenkins Post, GAR, Vernon, died last night, Feb. 12, 1937 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. E. Taylor, 60 West Park Street, Ilion. He had resided with Mrs. Taylor for the last two years. Death was due to the infirmities of age.
Cyrus Schall was born at (illegible) Mills, Herkimer County, March 21, 1840. When he was a lad, his parents moved to Vernon and he was educated in the commons schools of that vicinity and in Vernon Academy.
Mr. Schall enlisted as a musician in Company C. of the 117th regiment Aug 22, 1862. He went to the front with the army of the James and at the battle of Darby town Crossroads. Oct. 9, 1864, he received a serious gun shot wound in the arm. On this account he was honorably discharged from the service March 7, 1865.
After his return from the war, he was employed at the Hinckley Iron Works and at Westmoreland Malleable Iron Factory for some time. He served nine years as station agent at Hecla and then went to Syracuse where he lived for eight years, returning to Hecla in 1906 and since he had led a retired life.
Mr. Schall was always a Republican but never sought political office. He was a member of Jenkins Post, GAF of Vernon and the Union Congregational Church of Hecla. He married Miss Mary Braman of Vernon December 23, 1865. She died March 3, 1909.
He leaves besides Mrs. Taylor, two granddaughters, Mrs. Margaret Schmidt, Palisades, N.J., and Mrs. Dorothy Watson, Ridgefield, N.J.
The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family at Vernon.
