James Elmer Kline (known as Elmer), is the 3rd of 9 children born to James Albert Kline and Henrietta "Etta" Phelps Kline. After graduating high school, Elmer worked as a butter maker at the West Liberty Coop Creamery until 1939. He and his wife, Louise Merle Ridenour, then became farmers in Muscatine County. Elmer received an award from the Iowa Century Farms program acknowledging families who had farmed in Iowa for a 100 years or more. Elmer's family had been farming in Iowa since 1853. Elmer and Louise had one son, Harold.
Elmer's siblings were Jessie "Alberta" Kline, Anna C. Kline, Joseph Marvin "Joe" Kline, Robert "Wayne" Kline, Marion Francis "Pete" Kline, Charles "Everett" Kline, Mary Jean Kline, and Hazel Marie Kline.
