John was the second of four children born to Ogden Oglesby and Myrtle Elizabeth (Turner) Sides. He married Jane Linira (Long) in 1948 and they had two daughters: Grace and Elizabeth.

John O. Sides Mr. Sides, of Charlotte, departed this life on April 5, 2009. He was born in Albemarle, NC to Myrtle Elizabeth Turner and the late Odgen Oglesby Sides. The family moved to Paw Creek, NC where John's parents began working for Kendall Mills. Graduating from Paw Creek High School, John convinced his parents to give permission for him to immediately enlist in the Navy serving honorably during WWII on a sub chaser in the Atlantic. After completion of his military service, Mr. Sides chose to utilize the G. I. Bill to obtain his BS and Master's degrees from what is now known as Appalachian State University. After college, John taught as Watauga High School in Boone, NC. John met Jane Long Sides and they married in June of 1948. Their marriage continued for over 57 years and produced two daughters, Grace Sides Williamson and Elizabeth Sides Lineberger (Terry), both of Charlotte. Mr. Sides retired from Duff-Norton Company as a regional Sales Manager. An avid bowler and golfer, he also enjoyed many hours of his retirement with friends at the Green Meadows Golf Course in Mt. Holly, NC, as well as being 'Paw-Paw' to grandson Andrew Lineberger. A member of Long Creek Masonic Lodge, Mr. Sides was also a member of McGee Presbyterian Church which later became Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church. Mr. Sides served as Adult Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder and Clerk of the Session. John Sides is survived by his mother, daughters, son-in-law, grandson, sisters, Mrs. Daphene Silvey of Charlotte, Mrs. Pat Smith (Ken) of Hopkins, SC, sister-in-law, Mrs. Pauline McKee of Georgia, brother-in-law, Mr. Jim McLeroy of Charlotte and many nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mr. Sides was his father, a brother, Joe Luther Sides, wife Jane Long Sides and two granddaughters, Meredith Anne Williamson and Rachael Anne Lineberger. A service to remember John and celebrate his life will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, Doctors Warren G. Nance and Jeff Pinkston officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, 6701 Pleasant Grove Road, Charlotte, NC, 28216. Arrangements by Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service.
