Anchorage resident Bessie Jane Phillips, 63, died Sept. 14, 2006, at Alaska Native Medical Center. A visitation was held with a service at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Pastor Nathan Toots officiated. A graveside service was at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born on Jan. 25, 1943, in Shaktoolik, she attended grade school in Shaktoolik and high school at Mt. Edgecumbe in Sitka. She enjoyed her subsistence lifestyle, picking greens and berries, and loved to fish in Shaktoolik and on the Kenai River. She was very good at "MacGyvering" things to get them to work or meet her needs.
She is survived by her two children, Cindy and Donald Huff of Oregon; her brother and sister-in-law, Palmer and Fena Sagoonick; her sisters and brother-in-law, Arlene and Harvey Sookiayak of Shaktoolik, and Mattie Sagoonick and Herb Albert of Anchorage; her aunt, Eliza Katongan; best friends, Helen and Kevin; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Phillips; parents, Gustoff and Mary Sagoonick; sisters, Alma Nylin, Ethel Soxie and Evelyn Sagoonick; and brothers, Lars and Shawn Sagoonick. Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel
