Anchorage resident Mary Patricia "Pat" Leonard, 87, died peacefully March 14, 2005, from complications of multiple myeloma at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, with her son at her side.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Ninth Avenue and E Street. Interment will be at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Mrs. Leonard was born Jan. 1, 1918, in Seattle. She graduated from the University of Washington with a five-year degree in library science. She met her husband, Bennie, in the Puyallup library, and they took an Aleutian Steamship to Alaska in November 1941.
She worked as a retail clerk in Anchorage at the largest variety store in Alaska, Vaara's Variety, and then at Fort Richardson with the Corps of Engineers during World War II. She lived in Nome in the winter of 1944-45 with her husband, who was in the U.S. Army, ACS communications. She moved back to Anchorage in the fall of 1945 and spent the next 18 years working with her husband at the variety store, which he eventually purchased and ran with her as Leonard's Variety until 1962.
When the University of Alaska Anchorage was established in the mid '60s, she was the secretary and one of only two UAA employees in Anchorage. She later ran the bookstore and did transcript evaluations for students entering from other colleges until her retirement in 1979.
Her family wrote: "She loved homemaking and supporting her family. She was her daughter's Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She traveled Southcentral Alaska for berry picking. She went to many cooking classes and loved experimenting in the kitchen, which was always accumulating strange and interesting utensils. She canned and froze berries and vegetables from her husband's garden.
"Pat took up doll-housing and spent many enjoyable days at her friends' houses. She collected everyday items and found uses for them in her doll houses. A lover of words, she was a constant reader and worked the daily crossword puzzles."
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bennie; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Dorothy Park; son, Lewis; daughter, Margaret; uncle, James Belcher; and cousin, Robert Belcher.
