Paul Reuben "Gil" Jukuri
of Jackson, formerly of Westland and Detroit, age 92, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Jackson, Michigan. He was born January 22, 1916 in Allouez, Michigan, the son of Finnish immigrant parents, Henry and Ida (Kumpalainen) Jukuri. Paul was the last surviving child of 11 children. He first drove at the age of 13, and saw his first movie, King Kong, at the age of 17. He started as a teamster, using horses to haul logs, maple syrup and build roads. He worked for Burroughs Corp. for over 40 years, retiring in 1978. Paul was in the 96th Infantry, "the Deadeyes", during WWII. He earned the Bronze Star for his service in Leyte and Okinawa. Paul lived in Holliday Park Townhouse in Westland for 20 years. He was a member of the Finnish Center in Farmington Hills, where he called bingo and tended bar. Paul loved ice skating and was an avid golfer. He was outgoing and made friends easily. He had the knack of running into friends everywhere. He married Gertrude Susan Lampi in Detroit on August 29, 1942 and she preceded him in death on July 16, 1964. He is survived by three daughters, Susan Schillinger of Gainsville, FL, Kathryn "Kate" Jukuri of Jackson, Mary Louise (Robert Bieszka) Jukuri of Dexter; 2 grandchildren, Christine Mendoza and James Bieszka; 2 great-grandchildren, Kesiah and Lowen Mendoza; and special friend Margo Morsehead. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Hannah, Hilja, Martha, Sylvia, Vera, Mae, Eva, John, Eino, and Bill. A memorial service was held Sunday, June 22, at 2:30 pm. at the Finnish Center, 35200 West Eight Mile Road, Farmington, Hills, MI 48335. Burial will be at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 30300 Telegraph Rd Suite 117, Bingham Farms, MI 48025. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
