John married Rosa A Wicker on 7 October 1888 and to them were born three children. Only their son, Clyde, survived.
The family was living in the village of Norris City, White County, Illinois in 1900. At that time, John was a 34-year-old white male who had been born in Illinois during March 1866 to natives of the state. He worked for the railroad. Others in the household were his wife, R. A., and son, "Clide".
Ten years later, John and his family were still living in Norris City. Both John and Rosa were listed as 40 years old [sic] and they had been married 22 years. John was a laborer for the railroad, Their son Clyde, a 16-year-old, was a laborer at a lumber yard.
He was a member of the West Union Presbyterian church near Brownsville, Illinois. Later he moved his membership to the M. E. church of Norris City, Illinois where he remained until his death.
John was survived by his wife and one son, Clyde; two brothers, Alfred and Oscar of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and two sisters, including his twin, Mrs. Ella Pendergrass of Norris City, Illinois, and Mrs. Florence Forester of Thompsonville, Illinois.
Reverend J. B. Cummins officiated the funeral at the residence of the deceased.
