Former Casper Boy Killed Near Dixon
George Patrick Martin, 14, died as a result of a gunshot early Sunday morning on a ranch near Dixon. He was born March 30, 1953 in Wheatland.
He attended schools at Hartville, Dubois, Pavillion, Riverton, Dean Morgan Junior High in Casper, and Baggs High School. The family first lived in Glenrock, moved to Meadow Acres, and then to near Baggs in September of this year.
He is survived by his father, Donald C. Martin of 318 South Fifth in Casper; his mother, Mary Frances Hakalo of Dixon; several grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Martin of Pavillion, Mike Kramer of Glendo, John Dunn of Riverton, and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Martin of Torrington. Also surviving are a brother, John Martin of Douglas, a sister, Mrs. Gary (Catherine) Wilcox of Glenrock, as well as many other relatives.
Friends may call at Cornett's Hillside Mortuary after noon Wednesday. Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 8 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Requiem mass will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's. Interment will be in the Douglas Park Cemetery in Douglas, with arrangements under the direction of Cornett's Hillside Mortuary.

Ranch Worker Charged in Fatal Shooting
RAWLINS - A 35 year old ranch hand was charged with first degree murder Monday in the gunshot death of a 14 year old boy and the wounding of his wife early Sunday morning at the Harry Russell ranch, 11 miles east of Dixon.
Carbon County Sheriff Chuck Osborn said a man identified as Robert Hakalo, was charged with killing his 14 year old stepson, George Patrick Martin, and then wounding his wife, Mary Hakalo.
The slain youth was the son of Donald C. Martin of 318 South Fifth in Casper.
Hakalo was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Eddie Coppo late Monday on the first degree murder charge. A court appointed attorney, S. K. Briggs, was assigned to the case. Hakalo is being held in the Carbon County jail, without bond, Osborn said.
Mrs. Hakalo is in Carbon County Hospital for treatment of a bullet wound in her right thigh, and shock. Sheriff Osborn, said a .38 caliber was used in the shooting.
An Autopsy was planned for the Martin youth, and an inquest will be held. Dixon is a small ranching community about four miles north of the Colorado line in Carbon County.

Ranchhand Held On Murder Charge
RAWLINS (AP) – A 35 year old ranchhand Robert Hakalo was bound over in District Court Thursday on a first degree murder charge.
Hakalo is charged in the shooting death of his stepson George Patrick Martin 14.
Martin was shot to death Dec. 17 at a ranch near Dixon on the Colorado border in south-central Wyoming.
Mrs. Mary Hakalo who was shot in the right hip during the incident has recovered and been released from a hospital.

I never knew George although he was my second cousin; however, he is the reason I first began doing genealogy. I was visiting my grandmother in early January of 1968 and she was telling me about the incident above. I then asked her to tell me about other relatives that I never knew about. I later promised her that some day I would record our ancestry. Finally in 1973 I began doing it.
