-- A native of Chester, South Carolina, Mr. John Colvin Cornwall was born on November 18, 1887, the oldest child of Dr. John Eli Cornwall and Margaret Colvin Cornwall.

Mr. Cornwall was educated in the Chester Public Schools and Clemson University, class of 1909, by which institution he was honored. For twenty-four years he was agent for the Seaboard Air Line Railway in Chester and was also a pioneer in the insurance business, having entered this field in 1917 and continuing until he retired. He owned and operated J.C. Cornwall Insurance and Real Estate Agency for over forty years. He was a member of the South Carolina and National Association of Insurance Agents.

Mr. Cornwall served as Deputy Clerk of Court for Chester County under his father, Clerk of Court, Dr. John Eli Cornwall, for twenty-eight years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 18 A.F.M., 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. In 1956, he was a recipient of the Fiftieth Year Merit Emblem. He served on the Board of Shriner's Hospital in Green-ville, South Carolina, and was Governor of the Order of the Moose.

Mr. Cornwall was a member of the Chester City Council for twenty-six years. His record of service as a member of the council is the longest in Chester's municipal history. He was also Mayor Pro-Tem.

A picture of Mr. Cornwall was presented to the City of Chester on November 6, 1967 to the City of Chester in behalf of Colvin Cornwall Laney and Mrs. Marshall Hobson grandchildren.

A student of Chester history, Mr. Cornwall gave of his knowledge of the business establishments and accounts of happenings and people of Chester to many who sought out such information. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chester for sixty-four years. He served on many different committees and budget preparation for the church.

Mr. Cornwall was married on January 1, 1911 to Miss Ada Kirkpatrick. They had two daughters,Mrs. William Henry Hill (Kathryn Elizabeth Cornwall) and Mrs. Samuel Leopold Laney (Margaret Alice Cornwall). There are two grandchildren, Colvin Cornwall Laney and Mrs. Marshall Sharpe Hobson (Margaret Elizabeth Laney), also two great-randchildren, Jason Colvin Laney and Stephanie Leigh Hobson.

John Colvin Cornwall, a man of integrity; lover of family, nature and animals; kind, dependable and mild mannered; left a heritage to his family and friends.

On August 28, 1966, Mr. Cornwall died at the age of 79 after a long illness.
