FRANK EDWARD ANDRIST, 79, of 6338 23rd Ave. SW, Seattle, a stone carver died Thursday following a long illness.
Mr. Andrist was born in Stryker (Evansport) Ohio on July 6, 1875 to Jacob and Barbara Buser-Andrist. Frank married Margaret Mae Regan (Maggie) on May 21, 1900 at Crookston, Minnesota. He lived in Crookston, Minnesota for a number of years and came here from Bismarck, North Dakota 11 years ago.
Before moving to Seattle, Frank and Maggie lived at 508 Avenue E, Bismarck, North Dakota. Frank bought polished marble headstones at a stone quarry. He covered the smooth face of the stone with a thin layer of liquid that would harden to a rubber surface. He would then draw a specific design and printing ordered by a client. He was a master at drawing roses, lambs, doves, crosses and anyting suitable in good taste for a tombstone. Finally he would add the necessary name of the deceased and dates. He used a hammer and chisel with great skill. He then lifted the finished tombstone into the trunk of his car for delivery.
Frank often drove miles to locate a small white church on a prairie in central North Dakota. When he found the church he would also have to find the minister or priest to determine which grave to erect the marker on. Then he would mix up a small batch of cement (from supplies in his trunk) and set the tombstone upright on a cement base. Frank delivered and erected many tombstones in tiny cemeteries next to lonely churches that dotted the Dakota prairies during his lifetime. Frank was employd at Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, Washington as a tombstone carver and engraver prior to his retirement.
Frank was a member of Lodge No. 78, Ancient Order of United Workmen of Crookston. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, five daughters, Mrs. Howard (Mary Elma) Hendrickson and Mrs. Robert (Dorothea) Purcell, both of Seattle; Mrs. Bernard (Helen) Andrus of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. Ray (Catherine) LaVelle of Fargo, N D and Mrs. Walter (Frances) Schaur of Wishek, N D. Two sisters, Mrs. Julius Sundett and Mrs. Fred Spencer both of Crookston, two brothers, Jake Andrist of Rochelle, Ill and Roy Andrist of Hawthorne, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Requiem mass was offered in Holy Rosary church on Saturday and burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
