Obituary for Flora Diana Christian Hokenstad.
Flora Diana Hokenstad, nee Christian, died on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital. She was preceeded in death by her husband Merl. Flora was born July 18, 1909 at Tarkio, Missouri. She attended college and taught school for three years. She was married on January 13, 1933 to Merl C. Hokenstad at Calvary Cathedral in Sioux Falls. They lived in Luverne, Minnesota and then Norfolk, Nebraska, Estherville, Iowa, Crete and Fairbury, Nebraska. Flora was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Sioux Falls, having moved there with Merl in 1974.
Flora was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star including being a past Worthy Matron of the Crete Chapter. She was also a member of the Mary Chilton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an area and district manager for Field Enterprises. Flora was an active member in several Episcopal churches including serving on the Altar Guild in Crete and Fairbury for 25 years.
Her survivors include two sons, Dr. Merl C. Hokenstad and wife Dorothy of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Douglas Hokenstad of Omaha, Nebraska and one daughter, Diane Baxley and husband Jerry of Overland Park, Kansas. Flora had six grandchildren, Alene, Laura, Marta, Paul, Elizabeth and Brandon and two great grandchildren, Bridgette and Audrey. Flora has two surviving sisters, Bernice Dunn Mitchell, South Dakota and Pauline Verschoor of Chamberlain, South Dakota and one sister-in-law, Bernice Rikansrud of Sioux Falls.
Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Ron Briggs, Larry Weires, and grandsons, Paul and Brandon.
A memorial service for Flora will be held in the Dow Rummel Chapel, 1321 West Dow Rummel Street, Sioux Falls at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12th preceded by a private internment at Hills of Rest Memorial Park Cemetary. There will be a viewing at the Miller Funeral Home, 507 South Maine Avenue on Friday, April 11th, from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Good Shephard Episcopal Church or Dow Rummel Village.
