East-sider Irma Hooker, 65, Managed the Nickel Plate

SIOUX FALLS - Irma Hooker treasured living on the east side of Sioux Falls.

"She always believed her neighbors were the best in town," said Hooker's son, Kelly of Sioux Falls. "She was proud of the east side because of their caring."

Irma Hooker, 65, of Sioux Falls, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, from heart failure at Avera McKennan Hospital.

Hooker's neighbors weren't merely her friends, she considered them members of her extended family.

"She had unconditional love for everyone," Kelly Hooker said.

Hooker had a way of making strangers feel welcome.

"She generated automatic closeness. She would give you a big smile and openness to meet you. She treated you like that, to make you feel special," Kelly Hooker said. "She welcomed everyone into her house and heart."

Hooker was a compassionate woman.

If a young person died in a car accident, she would direct her thoughts toward the family of the deceased and sympathize with them.

Irma Benson was born on March 31, 1936, in Sioux Falls, to Dewayne and Edith (Ugland) Benson. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School.

She married Cliff Hooker on Oct. 10, 1959, in Pipestone, Minn. She managed the Nickel Plate Restaurant for 20 years. For 15 years, she worked at the Dakota Casket Company, until her retirement in 1985.

She was a member of East Side Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, six sons, one daughter, 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, one brother, and three sisters.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday in East Side Lutheran Church, with burial in Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with the family being present from 5 to 7 p.m.
