Death Claims H. Horton- President Elect of E.K.E.A. Dies At Grayson:
September 16: Herman Horton, about 37 years old , president elect of the Eastern Kentucky Education Association and county superintendent of the Carter County schools, died this morning at the Stovall hospital in Grayson, following an illness of six weeks.
Mr. Horton, for more than twelve years closely connected with the educational program of Carter county, had been ill for four weeks of blood poisoning when penumonia developed and he was removed to the Stovall hospital here. His condition became critical and he died this morning at 11:30 o'clock.
A member of one of the oldest families of Carter county, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Horton, of near Grahn.
He received his early education in the Carter county schools and received his teacher's degree at the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College at Richmond, Ky. For a number of years he taught at Grahn and later moved to Grayson. He became County Superintendent of Schools and for several years had been studying for a Masters Degree at University of Kentucky.
In 1937 he served as vice-president of the E. K. E. A. and at an early spring meeting this year was elected president of the Association for the 1938-39 term. He was to have taken this office in July but illness prevented him from doing so. During his engagement in the educational life of his community and county Mr. Horton had been very respected by all who knew him. His unexcelled work to keep Carter County's schools among the highly rated will be praised for years to come.
He was also president of the Christian Church Sunday School.
Not only was his work directed to the development of Carter county's educational programs but his untiring efforts towards promotion of the county's progress has played a great part of his life.
In Mr. Horton's death one of Carter county's leading and finest citizens educaitonally and civicly has passed away.
Surviving are his loving wife, Gracie Horton, one son Carol Lynn, and two daughters, Olive Lee and Thomas. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. E. C. Horton, one brother, Watt Horton, and three sisters; Mrs. Allen Crawford, Mrs. Sherman Adams and Mrs. Clarence Bush.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete butr will be sometime Sunday afternoon.(note from Ann; the newspaper has Carol Lynn Horton as a son when she is a daughter and has Joel Thomas as a daughter when he is a son.)
Herman Horton was the son of Elkanah "Elcanor" Horton and Alice Lawson. He was married to Grace Leavett Sanders.
