JOHN WILLIAM FITZ, JR., 77, of 14324 Harbaugh Church Road, Waynesboro, died Saturday, Oct. 18, in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Born Oct. 14, 1920 in Washington Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late John W., Sr. and Nora B. Hess Fitz. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Leone R. Martin Fitz.

He was a member of the former Harbaugh Reformed Church near Rouzerville, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and served on the consistory. At the time of his death, he was a member of Incarnation United Church of Christ, Emmitsburg, Md., where he sang in the choir and was a member of the consistory.

He was a 1938 graduate of Washington Township High School. During his early life, he worked on his family's farm. He later worked for Beck & Benedict Hardware, Waynesboro and Sons, Greencastle. He then was employed as a stockroom clerk at Frick Co., Waynesboro, for 15 years, leaving in 1983.

Prior to his retirement in 1993, he worked in the maintenance department at Sears, Hagerstown, Md., for five years. He was also a caretaker at Harbaugh Church Cemetery for 30 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Richard W. Fitz of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; three sisters, Fannie Harbaugh of Rouzerville, Arlene Patterson of Waynesboro, and Jennie Harbaugh of Greencastle; two brothers, Andrew Fitz and Ralph Fitz, both of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Kenneth L. Fitz, earlier this year; two half-sisters, Ruth Heffner and Naomi Carson; and one half-brother, Merle Fitz.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Harbaugh Reformed Church, Harbaugh Church Road, near Rouzerville, with the Revs. Sharon Forbes and Thomas Burns officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
