HOUSTON - Dewey Bennett Blanton was born in Algoma on January 13, 1927, the youngest of five children of Mr and Mrs D. M. Blanton. The family moved to Houston in April of 1932.
He graduated from Houston High School in May 1945 and entered the United States Air Force in June 1945. In October 1945 he was sent to Okinawa as a part of the Occupational Forces. While there he was transferred to the Signal Corps. He returned to the United States in June of 1946, and was stationed in Atlanta, Georgia, then discharged in November, 1946.
He married Omega Castles Blanton on January 10, 1948. In 1951 he and his wife graduated from the University of Mississippi in the field of Education.
He was employed as a teacher and coach in the Brooksville, Mississippi Public Schools. After two years he joined the staff of the Houston Public Schools. and served several years in the capacity of teacher and coach. and in the administration as elementary principal, junior high principal, high school principal and twelve and a half years as Superintendent, retiring in December 1977.
During those years he also served briefly as an administrator in the Columbus,Mississippi Public Schools, and as Director of the Chickasaw County Department of Human Services.
Following his retirement from the Houston School System in 1977 he briefly served as Title 1 Coordinator. He later served for a year as Title I Coordinator for the Pontotoc, Mississippi Pubic Schools, retiring in the Fall of 1980. He was employed as a salesman for Magnolia State School Products, Columbus, Mississippi for several years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Houston. He was a Christian.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Garland Blanton and Marlin Blanton, of Houston.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Omega Blanton of Houston, MS; two sisters, Barbara Carnes of Williamsburg, KY and Merle Blanton of Tupelo, MS; and several nieces and nephews.
Houston Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements, which will be held at Houston First Baptist Church, Saturday afternoon, July 31, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be from 12:00 Noon until the 2:00 PM service time at the church prior to the service. Conducting the service will be Brother Al Gaspard of Cookevlle, TN, assisted by Brother Daniel Heeringa of Houston First Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Leon Hollingsworth, William Gray, Henry Brown, Mike Croft, Gary Staten and Paige Cothern.
Honarary pallbearers are the reciepients of the Bennett and Omega Blanton scholarship, DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS, and the Men's Sunday School Class of Houston First Baptist Church.
