Birth: unknown
Death: Jun. 22, 1864

Pvt. Acker enlisted at N.Y.C. on 10/7/1862. He was mustered in on 11/18/1862. The 155th's service was relatively mild until early dawn on the fateful day of June 3,1864, at Cold Harbor, Va.. Gen. Grant's familiar tactic (or lack of tactics) of hammering at the enemy front with everything he had at once would be visited upon his men once again. By this time, there were grumblings in the north about the horrendous casualties the Union was suffering in such a short period of time. The common belief was that Grant "was supplying every household in the north with either a corpse or a cripple". At approx. 4:30 A.M. there was a general assault along the 4 mile front. The troops were mowed down by the thousands. Numbers vary, but a fair estimate was that about 10,000 men were killed or wounded in the first 20 minutes. The amazing thing was that Pvt. Acker's corps, the 2nd (W.S. Hancock's), on the left flank actually penetrated the rebel line. In hand to hand fighting they wrestled the position from the stubborn rebels. They took prisoners and a number of cannon, but without support, could not hold them. Confederate fire made the new position a death trap for the Federals. Pvt. Acker was severely wounded on this bloody field. His severely wounded right leg was amputated a short time later. He was transported to Washington D.C. and died there on June 22, 1864. Grant, usally indifferent, at least in appearance, would later say that this was the only assault that he regretted ordering during the war.
