Graveside services for Martha JoAnn Houk, 70, Topeka, will be at 12:30 p.m. today in the Fort Scott National Cemetery.

Mrs. Houk died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka following a battle with cancer.

She was born June 4, 1937, in Fidelity, the daughter of Martin Joseph and Mary Kathryn Grewing Werner. She graduated from Kincaid High School.

Mrs. Houk was a military wife and homemaker for most of her life. From 1961 to 1968, she and her husband owned and operated the Houk Insurance Agency in Moran. He later returned to service in the U.S. Navy, which sent the family coast to coast until his retirement in 1978, including homes in Kansas in Augusta, Humboldt, Lawrence, Bronson and Topeka.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially, in her later years, with her grandchildren.

She married John Eldon Willis on June 6, 1954. He died May 30, 1957. She married Joseph Benjamin Houk on May 10, 1959, in Moran. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Kurtis Houk and wife Patricia, Lawrence; four daughters, Karen Jones and husband Mike, Oak Harbor, Wash.; Nancy Izett and husband Cory, Whitefish, Mont.; Jan Crawford and husband Steve, Topeka, and Lori J. Stephens and husband Rick, Bronson; her mother, Mary Werner, Bronson; three brothers, Bill Werner, Winston-Salem, N.C., Tom Werner, Cherryvale, and Leo Werner and wife Vicki, Newton; a sister, Delores Smith and husband Gary, Topeka; a brother-in-law, Lyle Osborn, Overland Park; two sisters-in-law, Leona Werner, Chanute, and Sheryl Werner Parsons; 10 grandchildren, Katherine Jones, Justin and Scott Izett, Canda Harvey and Caroline Crawford, David Kearney, Aric and Erina Houk, and Conor and Riley Stephens; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Cynthia J. Osborn; and two brothers Martin "Pete"
