Magdalena "May" Schlador Chandler was born in Kerr (later Kendall) County, Texas, the second daughter and youngest child of German immigrants Hermann Frederich Heinrich (F. H.) and Franziska Wiedenfeld Schlador. Some time between 1870 and 1880, the family moved from Texas to Oregon. Between 1880 and 1886, the family moved to California, where Magdalena met Harry Chandler of the Los Angeles Times. They were married in Los Angeles County on February 6, 1888/89 by S. H. Weller, a Presbyterian minister.

Harry and Magdalena's first daughter, Franciska, was born 07 April 1890. She married Dr. John Lawrence Kirkpatrick in 1917, but died in 1933 at the age of 43, leaving as survivors her husband, two sons and a daughter.

Harry and Magdalena's second daughter, Alice May, was born 22 July 1892. She married Roger Goodan in 1915, and they had four children; two sons and two daughters. Alice May died in 1984 at the age of 91.

Sadly, shortly after Alice May's birth, the lovely Magdalena died of puerperal fever. Her obituary follows:

The funeral of the late Mrs. Magdalena Chandler, wife of Harry Chandler, of the circulation department of the The Times, took place from the residence No. 719 Rosas Street, at 2 o'clock yesterday, and it was very largely attended. The service were conducted by Rev. Mr. Hughes of East Los Angeles, and were simple but impressive, the minster paying a high tribute to the life and character of the deceased. The interment was in Evergreen. The following were the pall-bearers: C.H. Hall, C.E. Richardson, F. X. Pfaffinger and W.K. Bowker.
