Western Frontiersman. Considered the "Founding father of the National Park Ranger Service", he served as the first and only gamekeeper in Yellowstone National Park, the world's first National Park. He enlisted twice in the Civil War Union Army, mustering out as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant. In 1866, he came to Wyoming Territory working along the Bozeman Trail. He worked as a contract hunter for the Smithsonian Institution, providing specimens of western fauna for exhibits. During the 1878 Hayden Geological Survey to Yellowstone, he worked as a wrangler and packer. He was appointed gamekeeper of Yellowstone in 1880. His duties included protecting wildlife from poachers, and guiding visiting dignitaries. Prior to his resignation in 1881, he pointed out in a report that it was impossible for one man to patrol the park, and urged the formation of a ranger force. (bio by: Eric Crow)
