Ellen was the daughter of Henry Irwin and Elizabeth (Cromwell) Irwin, who married on 15 June 1815 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. In Ellen's obituary, her father's name is given as George Irwin.
Ellen married Gen. Arnold Elzey (18 Dec 1816 - 21 Feb 1871) on 19 May 1845 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Gen. Elzey was born as Arnold Elzey Jones, Jr., to Arnold Elzey Jones, Sr., (died 1839) and Anne Wilson (Jackson) Jones ["Nancy"], who married on 1 Mar 1803 in Somerset County, Maryland. He was born at "Elmwood," which is located at 10071 Locust Point Road on the Manokin River in Oriole, Somerset County, Maryland.
After graduating from West Point in 1837, Arnold starting using his middle name as his surname. ‘Elzey' was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother.
Arnold was wounded at the Battle of Gaines' Mill/First Cold Harbor (27 June 1862) when a minié ball struck him just above the mouth and passed out behind his left ear. When he recovered and returned to duty, he had been promoted to Major General on 4 Dec 1862.
In the 1870 U.S. Census, Arnold and Ellen were living in the 4th District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and he was a "farmer."
Gen. Elzey died in Baltimore City, Maryland. Ellen died in Church Home and Infirmary in Baltimore City.
Their two children were a daughter who died in infancy and Arnold Jones Elzey (8 Nov 1849 - 16 Aug 1881). Arnold was baptized on 4 May 1850 in Saint Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church, Baltimore City, Maryland.

The will of the late Ellen Elzey, who died February 23, makes the following distribution of her estate: To Rev. Robert H. Paine, rector of St. Paul's Mt. Cavalry Church, $500; to Sister Caroline, eldest daughter of the late Dr. Francis Donaldson, $500; to her nephew, Arnold Elzey Waters, $2000; to her nephew Levin L. Waters, Jr., $1000; to her niece, Mrs. William Boykin, $1000; to Arnold Elzey Howard, $100; to Arnold Elzey Waters, $1000, in trust for her niece, Nina McBlair; to Arnold Elzey Waters is left a diamond ring and $50 (the money is left for the purpose of having the diamond set in the chalice of Mt. Calvary Church); to a number of her relatives the testatrix bequeaths furniture, ornaments and pictures; to her servant, Harriet Ashby, $100,; to Mrs. William W. Donaldson, $1000; the balance of the estate is left to her nephew, Arnold Elzey Water, absolutely, who is named as the executor. The will is dated June 30, 1897. The testatrix died February 23, 1902.
Arnold Elzey Waters (1861-1917) and Levin L. Waters, Jr., (1866-1912) were the sons of Lucretia (Jones) Waters (1827-1910), the sister of Gen. Arnold Elzey, and her husband, Levin Lyttleton Waters (1829-1900). Arnold Elzey Waters is #61516430.
