William Harvey was born 08 Mar 1802 (based on age at death shown in Wymore Cemetery Records, Mahaska County, Iowa) probably in Greene County, Pennsyvania to George Harvey (1768-1845) and George's first wife, Jane McNett Harvey.

Based on census entries in 1810 and 1820 for William's father George Harvey in Greene County, it appears that William was living with his father at the time each of those censuses was taken.

William married Sarah Bardell, probably about 1828 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, based on the birthdate of their first child, Sarah Jane Harvey, on 07 March 1829 in Pennsylvania.

According to "Family and Descendants of George Harvey 1768-1845" by Ethel Mae Beaver Harvey: "William & Sarah moved to Indiana after two children were born . . ."

The statement that "William and Sarah moved to Indiana after two children were born" is not consistent with census entries in 1850 and 1860 showing that William and Sarah's second child, John B. Harvey, was born in Indiana. Age at death from Wymore Cemetery records shows John B. Harvey was born 08 Jan 1831. Therefore, it appears likely that William and Sarah moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana sometime between 07 Mar 1829 and 18 Jan 1831, after one child was born.

No 1830 census entry has been found which appears to match this family.

1840 Federal Census for Jackson, Hancock, Indiana (affirmed 23 Oct 1840) shows William Harvey as head of household with:

2 males under 5 (Alexander age 3 & Isaac Milburn age <1)
1 male 5 & under 10 (John B. age 9)
1 male 30 & under 40 (William age 38)
1 female 5 & under 10 (Rachel Ann age 6)
1 female 10 & under 15 (Sarah Jane age 11)
1 female 30 & under 40 (Sarah age 36)

Also, according the 1840 Census, William, Sarah & family were apparently living next to or near Sarah's parents, John & Sarah Bardell. John is shown as head of family, on the line above William Harvey, with:
1 male 70 & under 80 (John age abt. 66 - doesn't quite fit)
1 female 70 & under 80 (Sarah age abt. 72)

According to "Family and Descendants of George Harvey 1768-1845" by Ethel Mae Beaver Harvey: "then he [William] went to California in the gold rush. They lived in Sonoma Co. California, 30 miles north of San Francisco."

If William (with or without Sarah or other family members) went to California, it was apparently either before or after the 1850 census was taken in Indiana. That census (taken 26 Jul 1850 for Blue River, Hancock Indiana) shows:
William Harvey, age 49, male, farmer, born in Pennsylvania
Sarah Harvey, age 46, female, born in Maryland
Sarah J [or L]. Harvey, age 21, female, born in Pennsylvania
John Harvey, age 19, male, farmer, born in Indiana, attended school within the year
Rachel A. Harvey, age 15, female, born in Indiana, attended school within the year
Alexander Harvey, age 13, born in Indiana, attended school within the year
Isaac M. Harvey, age 10, male, born in Indiana, attended school within the year
Elizabeth E. Harvey, age 8, female, born in Indiana, attended school within the year
Angeline Harvey, age 6, female, born in Indiana, attended school within the year

A trip to California during the Gold Rush, if it happened, seems more likely to fit into the time line after the 1850 census and before William and Sarah appear in Mahaska County, Iowa in about 1853. The California Gold Rush lasted from 1849-1855.

On 10 Oct 1852, Sarah Jane Harvey, daughter of William and Sarah, married Isaac Daniel Lewis in Hancock County, Indiana. And on 17 Sep 1853, Rachel Ann Harvey married Henry H. Bentley in Hancock County, Indiana.

The obituary of Sarah Bardell Harvey indicates that she moved from Hancock County, Indiana to Mahaska County, Iowa in October 1853. Information supplied by Paul Bardell indicates William and Sarah Bardell Harvey traveled by wagon with Sarah Cravens Moore (her husband Isaac Daniel Moore had died in 1852 in Highland County Ohio). Sarah Cravens Moore was the matriarch of the Rose Hill, Mahaska County Moore family.

According to "Family and Descendants of George Harvey 1768-1845" by Ethel Mae Beaver Harvey: "William was in Mahaska Co. Iowa by 1853 and bought two or three farms."

The 1856 Iowa State Census for Adams Township, Mahaska County shows:
Wm Harvey age 54, male, married, in Iowa 3 years, born in Pa, farmer, native voter, owner of land, 23 acres improved, 137 acres unimproved, 2 acres of meadow, 5 acres of spring wheat 112 bushels harvested, 1 acre of oats 66 bushels harvested, 15 acres of corn 660 bushels harvested, ½ acre of potatoes 40 bushels harvested, 12 hogs sold for $116, 1 cow sold for $22, 200 pounds of butter manufactured
Sarah Harvey, age 51, female, married, in Iowa 3 years, born in Md
John B Harvey, age 25, male, in Iowa 3 years, born in Ia [probably Indiana; Iowa is written out on same page]
Alexander Harvey, age 18, male, in Iowa 3 years, born in Ia
I M Harvey, age 16, male, in Iowa 3 years, born in Ia
Elizabeth E Harvey, age 14, female, in Iowa 3 years, born in Ia
Angeline M. Harvey, age 12, , female, in Iowa 3 years, born in Ia

Note that William was harvesting about 44 bushels per acre of corn in 1856. Today (2007), Iowa farmers harvest over 160 bushels per acre of corn.

0n 30 Dec 1858, Sarah Jane Harvey Lewis, daughter of William and Sarah and with of Isaac Daniel Lewis, died in Mahaska County, Iowa, at age 29, and is buried in Wymore Cemetery.

The 1860 Federal census for Adams, Mahaska, Iowa taken 27 July 1860 shows:
William Harvey, [no age], male, farmer, $1,000 of real estate, $825 of personal estate, born in Penna
Sarah Harvey, [no age], female, housewife, born in Penna
John B Harvey, age 29, male, farm laborer, born in Indiana
Alexander Harvey, age 28, male, farm laborer, born in Indiana
Isaac M. Harvey, age 20, male, farm laborer, born in Indiana
Elizabeth E. Harvey, age 18, female, Seamstress, born in Indiana
Angeline Harvey, age 16, female, Seamstress, born in Indiana

On 08 Nov 1860, Alexander Harvey, son of William & Sarah, married Mary Eliza Stringfellow.

On 03 Feb 1861, John B. Harvey, son of William and Sarah, died in Mahaska County, Iowa, at age 30, and is buried in Wymore Cemetery.

On 04 Sep 1861, William, on of Alexander and Mary Eliza Harvey (grandson of William & Sarah) died at age 1 day, and is buried at Wymore Cemetery in Mahaska County, Iowa.

On 23 Jun 1862, Capitolia, daughter of Henry and Rachel Bentley (granddaughter of William & Sarah) died at age 16 mos. And is burried at Wymore Cemetery.

On 22 Nov 1862, William Harvey died at age 60 years, 8 months, 14 days, and is burried at Wymore Cemetery.

According to "Family and Descendants of George Harvey 1768-1845" by Ethel Mae Beaver Harvey: "After his (William's) death in 1862 his wife Sarah went back to California in 1866 after making William's half brother, Simon Lockard Harvey her power of attorney 24 Feb 1866."

According to Sarah's Obituary, she left with her family for California in April of 1864, reaching Santa Rosa in the late summer. From land records in Mahaska County, Sarah sold off all of her land in the early 1860's before moving.

Sarah died in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, on 13 Mar 1880.
