Enlisted 1 Jan 1864 (credited to Springfield) mustered in as Pvt. to Co. H 11th Vermont Infantry (1st Heavy Artillery) 1 Jan 1864, transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps 21 Aug 1864 and mustered out on 28 Aug 1865.

From the Rutland Daily Herald, Oct. 9, 1899:
Samuel Barker died at his home on Convent avenue, of erysipelas, Saturday morning at the age of 86 years. He was born in Windsor and came to Rutland in 1831 and, with the exception of eight years spent at Hanover, N.H., had lived here since that date. He married Miss Lovina Brown of Rutland in 1832. He was a member of the 11th Vermont volunteers during the civil war. He was a shoemaker by trade and continued in that work until about 15 years ago. He leaves a widow, a son, Barney Barker of Rutland; a daughter, Mrs. L.D. Kenney of Rutland; two brothers, John Barker of East Plainfield, N.H., and Frederick Barker of North Walpole, N.H., and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Bugbee of Lebanon, N.H. and Mrs. Elizabeth Benton of Hanover, N.H. The funeral will be held at the house this afternoon at 12.10 o'clock.
