Jennie Clarke was a daughter of Linden Sydnor Clarke and Martha Anne Perdue. As a teenager she sang, a soprano, at her church the Second Baptist Church in Manchester, Virginia and at many events in her area. She married to Powhatan S. Schenck in 1882, they had 6 children.
