In 1850, Lyman Humes lived in Hampden Township, Cumberland County, with the Jacob Dill family and is listed in the census as an orphan. He married Annie Butt, but she died November 23, 1875. Also married widow Laura E. Crawford, née Clark, August 20, 1885, in Harrisburg. Two sources have him living either in Wrightsville, York County, or in Perry County during the early 1860s.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 7, 1862, and mustered in Harrisburg four days later with Co. B, 130th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Promoted to corporal January 1, 1863, and honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. He then enlisted in Harrisburg August 5, 1864, with Co. K, 9th Pa Cav (92nd Pa), at the rank of private. Captured near Fayetteville, North Carolina, March 10, 1865, incarcerated at Richmond, Virginia, and paroled March 30, 1865. Discharged by general order in Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 29, 1865.
