DePass, Evelyn Nickles
Evelyn Nickles DePass, 91, a resident of Dothan died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Extendicare.
She was born and raised in Hodges, S.C., the daughter of Louise Talbert Nickles and William Benton Nickles. Evelyn was preceeded in death by her beloved childhood sweetheart and husband of 60 years, Lt. Col. Maurice Mitchell "Mike" DePass. During World War II, she, like so many American women, joined the work force to keep the country moving while her career Army husband served in the military. With a new dress and a horse-hair hat, she remembered going to New York to meet his aircraft carrier when he returned from the Korean War in 1952. As an officer's wife she adapted quickly to their many assignments, to include a three year tour in Germany, carving lasting impressions in the deep relationships formed all over the world. They moved to Dothan in 1964 from Talladega, and it was love a first sight. They both knew this was the place where they would stay, retire, and grow old. Her home, just like her sweet and loving heart, was always filled with light, laughter and good times.
She was an accomplished artist expressing herself creatively through her paintings and flower arrangements. Evelyn also enjoyed reading, cooking and playing bridge. She found beauty in everything and everyone. She was a secretary at Heard Elementary School for many years and a member of St. Matthias Anglican Church and a former member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, the Retired Officers Wives Association, Ladies Study Club and the Dothan Country Club.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Gail Mitchell DePass of Dothan and Carole DePass Hale and her husband, Bill of Cumming, Ga.; two granddaughters, Ashley Hale Morgan and her husband, Marcus, and Brandy Hale O'Donnell and Patrick, her husband, all of Cumming. Seven great-grandchildren will miss her dearly, Haley, Mitchell, and Jackson Willis, Madeleine and Olivia Morgan, and Lily and Peyton O'Donnell. All memories of her are and will forever be good ones of a long and wonderful life filled with love of family, friends and country.
The family will be receiving friends at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Thursday officiated by the Rector Lawrence W. Thompson, pastor of St. Matthias Anglican Church. Interment will follow at Memory Hill Cemetary. Flowers will be accepted by the family or a donation to St. Matthias Anglican Church, P.O. Box 1048, Dothan, AL 36302 or to a favorite charity.
