Hugh W. CAMPBELL, 80 years old, died Monday morning, August 28,
at 4:45 a.m. at the home of their daughter, Mrs. A. E. STEWART of Dormont
borough, Mt. Lebanan (sic) post office. Mr. CAMPBELL was born in County
Down, Ireland, and came to the United States in 1849. He spent most of his
life near Toms Run. He was a veteran of the Civil War, being one of the
twenty-three men that enlisted in Company D., 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers,
August 22, 1862, at the old Hill Church. Mr. CAMPBELL saw much service and
was in the Battle of Gettysburg, where Company D was on the firing line one
entire day and lost many of its members. Mrs. CAMPBELL died in 1891. Three
sons, Coulter and Bert both of Millers Run, and William B. of Oakdale,
survive, also one daughter Mrs. A. E. STEWART of Mt. Lebanan, two brothers,
William W. of Smith's Ferry and John of near Oakdale, and one sister, Mrs.
Ann CLOSE of McDonald. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon.
Interment was made in Robinson's Run cemetery.
