Bernard Joseph Gehlhausen married Katherine M. Walsh on Sept. 15, 1904. They had several children, daughters Elnora (Oct. 20, 1906) and Amelia Bridget (Jan. 8, 1908) and sons Francis Benjamin (March 11, 1910), Ervin B. (also March 11, 1910) and John Joseph (May 6, 1912). It's unclear what happened to Ervin B. Gehlhausen. A record of his death seems unavailable, but he clearly didn't survive into childhood. Francis died on July 8, 1911 as a toddler with whooping cough. Francis is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana.
In 1910, the family lived at 1423 E. Washington Street in Evansville with the kids and Katie's brother, Robert Walsh, who like Ben, was a brakemen on the railroad.
By 1920, Ben continued with the railroad and the family rented a home at 1827 E. Delaware Street in Evansville with daughters Elnora and Amelia and son John.
The 1930 Census indicates the family owned a home valued at $6,000 at 700 E. Delaware Street in Evansville with daughters Elnora and Amelia and son John. Ben Gehlhausen worked as a conductor with C&EI Railroad. At some point, he may also have worked for Louisville & Nashville Railroad.
On Friday, April 3, 1936, Elnora died. She was 30 years old. She was affectionately called "El" by her family and friends. A deep loss for her parents and devoted sister Amelia and brother John.
In 1943 the family was living in a brick home R.R. 5, Stringtown Road, Evansville, Ind.

Entered road service as a brakeman in 1906, and was promoted to conductor in 1910 by Mr. J. O. Bell, who at that time was superintendent. Mr. Gehlhausen or (Ben) as he is known to his hundreds of friends along the line, says that he has enjoyed every day of the past forty years of being an employee of the Evansville & Terre Haute Rail Road and C&EI Rail Road He has seen a lot of men enter and leave the service in the past forty years. Ben has been a member of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen for 36 years, a life long member of the Church of the Assumption, Evansville, Ind. Ben is married and resides with his wife, Katty, R. R. 5, Stringtown Road, Evansville, Ind. They have two children, a son, John, with our armed forces, and one daughter, Amelia, who is in Seattle, Wash., and is employed on a government project. Their son, John Joseph,and his wife Charlotte (Dress) Gehlhausen, daughter of three-time Evansville mayor William H. Dress, also moved to California, though they returned to Evansville in the late 1940s. Katherine died in North Hollywood (May 31,1944) and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. Ben died Aug. 28, 1951 in Camino, Calif., where their daughter, Amelia Bridget (Gehlhausen) Peirsol (Mrs. Clayton Howard Peirsol), also lived. Amelia Peirsol was postmaster at Camino, California.
