Carrie Emma Cotton was the daughter of Alma Augusta (Fuller) and Herbert Melander Cotton. In 1904, when the family first moved to Mount Vernon, Washington, Carrie and her sisters worked at the Skagit Steam Laundry. Later she worked at Murphy's Ready-To-Wear Shop. In 1917, Carrie and her sister Martha went to Seattle and took a nine month course at Wilson Business College.
At one time she worked for the First Christian Church and did janitor work there. In 1930, Carrie and her sisters, Martha and Mabel lived in Seattle, Washington and Carrie was a bookkeeper at a wholesale candy company. Carrie worked for Wallace Candy, Dent Candy and finally Roger Candy Company. She was a chocolate dipper and/or bookkeeper for these companies.
In 1909, Carrie was baptized at first Christian Church of Mount Vernon. She was a member of that church, Burlington Garden Club, Willing Workers of Burlington and the Dr King Hospital Guild.
