Richard E. ‘Dick' Avise

ROCKWELL — Richard E. "Dick" Avise, 82, of Rockwell died Wednesday (July 7, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 12, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second St. S. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial with military honors will be 1 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the church.

Dick was born on Sept. 22, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Cecil Hedges and Alma Leone (Thompson) Avise. He grew up in Rockwell, graduating from the Rockwell High School in 1946. He was inducted into the Navy in June 1946 and served his country for two years.

Dick was united in marriage to Dolores Suby on April 9, 1950, in Mason City. The couple made their home in Mason City for 10 years before moving to Rockwell. He was a farmer, and also worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, eventually becoming the Rockwell Postmaster. He retired from the U.S.P.S. in 1983 and retired from farming in 1998.

Dick was active in many organizations in his hometown, earning the title of "Mr. Rockwell." He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and served as chairman of the church board for a time. He was active in Lion's Club, American Legion, VFW and was a volunteer for the fire department. He also served as secretary and president of the board of the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a 25-year member, chairman of the Rockwell Nursing Home Board, a board member of the Farmer's Co-op Gas and Oil, a board member of the Rockwell Telephone Office, managed Century Home Apartments, was chairman of the Civil Service Commission of Cerro Gordo, and was the chairman of the N.A.R.F.E Chapter 170 Alzheimer's Association.

In his free time he raised sweet corn for the Rockwell Chicken Barbeque and collected John Deere memorabilia. He was also an avid Hawkeye and Twins fan. Dick always managed to stay busy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-brother, Richard P. Smith; and twin brothers, Arthur and Arnold in infancy.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Dolores; Children (Omitted for privacy).
