" Westphalen Monument
The Marble Shaft Which Will Mark The Tomb of the Children Who Perished in the Snow.
As a result of the efforts of those who sympathize with the Westphalen children who perished in the storm of January 12th, 1888, in raising a monument fund amounting to $237.50 G.H. Hodges, proprietor of the Fremont Marble Works, has today completed a handsome and appropriate monument which is to be placed to their memory over their graves.
Aside from the limestone base which is two feet high, the monument is of the usual design and of a handsome Rutland blue marble. On the first base of the monument the word "Westphalen" is carved in large letters. A second base is placed above this with a die, on the front of which is the inscription "Sacred to the memory of Eda C. and Matilda M. daughters of Peter and Catherine Westphalen who perished in the great storm of January 12th, 1888".
One side is the name of Eda C. with the date of death and "age 13 years 4 months and 10 days." On the other that of "Matilda M., aged 8 years 7 months and 6 days."
Upon a cap with a deep O G moulding and a plint of the same thickness stands the shaft which with the other pieces made a symmetrical and appropriate monument, ornamented in good taste and appropriate design. The monument is 14 feet high from the ground must for years to come be a source of satisfaction to those who see it and by contributing to its expense manifested their deep sympathy for the little heroine suffers."
