Brown was born in Massachusetts where he served as a Private in the Massachusetts 3rd Regiment Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. His regiment,in existence from Aug 1864 to Sep 65 was assigned to protection of Washington north of the Potomac River. He married Mary Jane Menchew and together they had six children, Mary Frances, Maggie, Edward, Wesley, Rosetta (Rosa) and Leola. He moved from Wood County, TX to Humble to be closer to children. The family story is that Brown was a Pentacostal Minister to the minorities, especially the blacks, and encountered difficulties with the KKK. Mary Jane Menchew Brown Smith is buried in Rosewood Cemetery in Humble.
