A Man of Energy and Patriotic Endeavor
The funeral of William L Lance, whose death occurred on the 2d instant, took place Monday afternoon from his residence, Green and Seymour streets. The services were conducted by the Rev. Alpha G. Kynett, pastor of St. Stephen's Methodist Episcopal Church, assisted by the Rev. Ransom Harvey, pastor of the Third Baptist Church. The pall bearers were six sons of the deceased, and interment was made in Ivy Hill Cemetery. A large number of friends, representing some of the most important business concerns in Philadelphia and elsewhere, were present. Deceased was born in this city 78 years ago and has been variously identified with important industries. During the late war Mr. Lance was given a recruiting commission by Governor Curtain at Pottsville, where he raised several companies for the 143d Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was given a captain's commission in the Thirtieth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was never discharged from service in the army. Seven sons survive, two of whom were in the Thirtieth Regiment with him. His wife died about two years ago.
