Marine Corps veteran; technician in floor trade
NEW BEDFORD - Armand Soares Amaral, 80, died Friday at Forest View Nursing Home in Wareham, after a long illness.
He was the husband of Barbara (Perry) Amaral.
Mr. Amaral was born in New Bedford. A World War II veteran of the Marine Corps, he served as a corporal. He went on to serve during the Korean War with the rank of sergeant. After his discharge from the military, he worked for the Goodyear Company.
He was a self-employed master technician in the floor covering trade, and was a lifelong resident of the New Bedford area.
He was a former member of the American-Portuguese War Veterans of New Bedford. During his younger years, he played ball for the Mt. Carmel Catholic Youth Organization. He later played baseball for the New Bedford Hoboes. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed golfing and dancing.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in New Bedford.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Mark Amaral of Swansea; a daughter, Kimberly Amaral of Bourne; a sister, Dolores Stucker of Antioch, Calif.; a brother, Kenneth Amaral of Louisville, Ky.; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St., New Bedford, followed at noon by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, New Bedford. Burial is in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
