Officer Jonathan Schmidt was shot and killed at approximately 11:30 pm as he and another officer made a traffic stop.

The officers were walking towards the car when an occupant opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Schmidt. The subject was taken into custody.

Officer Schmidt had served with the Trumann Police Department for four years.

Schmidt was married and was the father of three children. He had been on the police force since 2007, and was recently commended for saving the life of a 1-year-old child by performing CPR.


Officer Jonathan Richard Schmidt was born on Wednesday, July 2, 1980, son of Donald and Kathy Schmidt, Sr. He died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro, Ark. from a gunshot wound he received, while in the line of duty, Tuesday night, at the age of 30 years 9 months and 11 days. Officer Schmidt was born in West Memphis, Ark. and had lived his lifetime in Trumann. He was a Police Officer for the Trumann Police Dept. and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Trumann. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Ruby Smith of Trumann and Eva Schmidt of Trumann.

Survivors include his wife, Andrea Schmidt of the home; two sons, Jonathan Chace and Keaton Richard Schmidt and one daughter, Haleigh Madison Schmidt all of the home; parents, Donald and Kathy Schmidt of Trumann; one brother, Donald Lee Schmidt Jr. of Ft. Worth, TX; one sister, Deana McArthur of Jonesboro, Ark.; and grandfather, Richard "Dick" Schmidt of Trumann.

Funeral service will be Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Baptist Church 3707 Harrisburg Rd. Jonesboro, Ark. 72404, with Rev. Donald Schmidt, Jr. and Rev. Charles Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ark. under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann.

Active pallbearers will be Aaron Riddle, Ryan Adams, Toby Doke, Jeremy Abbott, Don Brown, David Fagan, Jason McArthur, and Scott Preston.

Honorary pallbearers will be D.J. Penter, Zach Penter, Courtney Schmidt, Logan Schmidt, Brent Henderson, John Paul Thompson, Eddie Penna, David Burchfield, and all fellow brothers in arms.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1301 Hwy. 69 West Trumann, Ark. 72472.

A Scholarship fund for Chace, Haleigh, & Keaton Schmidt has been set up at Southern Bancorp Bank in Trumann, Ark.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church 220 Pine Ave. Trumann, Ark.
