Thomas was born May 19, 1849, in Effingham County, Illinois. He came to Montgomery County with his morther and siblings after the death of his father, Newton Martin on October 1, 1865, in Effingham County, Illinois. His sister and her husband had come to Montgomery County in 1869 and it is assumed the rest of the family followed because according to the 1870 census they were firmly established as a household. He then met and fell in love with a Hillsboro girl and on October 12, 1875, he married Ida Illinois Clotfelter, daughter of William Short Clotfelter and Susan Barbara (Scherer) Clotfelter.
"By 1886 the family was comprised of Daisy, born October 21, 1876; LaRue, born December 8, 1878; Thomas Paisley, born December 19, 1880; Nell Ora, born November 27, 1883; and Myrtle Edna, Born January 20, 1886. They lived on a farm is East Fork Township, owned by Ida's father. On April 26, 1887, occured the untimely death of Thomas Ives Martin."
