JEANETTE SMITH SHIVERS Was the first child born to Jimmy and Ivory Smith in Kisciusko, Mississippi on February 18, 1942. The young family which now included Jeanette's younger brother, Jimmy (Sonny) Smith Jr., moved to Gary, Indiana in 1946. Jeanette attended Pulaski Elementary School and later graduated from Froebel High School with the Class of 1960. Jeanette worked in the dental offices of Dr. Paul Stephens while in high school and continued working there during her vacations from Tennessee State University where she attended college. She received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education in 1965. That same year she became a teacher at Marquette Elementary School in the Miller neighborhood of Gary. Jeanette received an M.S. degree in education from Indiana University in 1972. She worked at Marquette School until 1978 at which time she was hired as a teacher with District 147 in Harvey, Illinois. Jeanette served as principal of the following schools: Blackhawk Elementary School in Park Forest, Illinois, Warren Palm Middle School and Woodland Elementary Schools in Hazel Crest, Illinois. Jeanette took early retirement from the educational profession and the students that she loved due to an unforseen illness. Love was an integral part of Jeanette's life. She enjoyed a devoted and committed relationship with her husband of forty years. John and Jeanette Shivers married on April 16, 1966. They enjoyed a true covenant union characterized by mutual respect. Neither walked in the other's shadow, yet whenever needed, they came together as one. The bond between them solidified during Jeanette's recent illness. Jeanette professed an early belief in Christ. She was a member of the First A.M.E. Church in Gary, Indiana. She later moved her membership to Bethel Temple Church of God in Christ. Jeanette enjoyed a special relationship with the late Pastor Theodis Rumph and his spirit filled wife, Lucille.
