Francis Thornton is the Granduncle of Meriwether Lewis the Lewis & Clark Explorers etc.
Born at Snow Creek Plantation, Essex, Virginia and died at Fall Hill Plantation, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Virginia.
Inscription on his gravestone is:
"Here lies the Body of
Who departed this life the
Seventh of April Anno Dom
One Thousand Seven Hundred
And Forty Nine in the Thirty
Eighth Year of his age"
Francis Thornton, III, Acquired Land Grants for 2631 acres in the southern part of the FT Valley. He gave the "Montpelier" tract to his son, William (six years old at his father's death), in his 1748 Will. He died in 1749, a wealthy man at the age of 38. His will required that his Estate "…be kept together and undivided…" until his sons came of age and received their shares
